Create Your Own Networking Event or Group!
It’s becoming clear to me that so many people are looking for in-person opportunities to connect, and I’m always encouraging my job seeker clients to find jobs via making new connections. Something I’ve also encouraged them to do lately: create your own event or group if you can’t find one you’re interested in!
About 2 years ago now, my lovely friend, Robin King, and I were commiserating about our challenges as entrepreneurs while also being parents. After not finding any local women’s networking opportunities that clicked for us, we decided we should create our own by first meeting with our friends who owned their own businesses (about 5 of us).It felt so great to have this support system that we decided to open it up via social media.
So many local women have joined us, and it has created amazing opportunities for collaboration and learning. We celebrate our wins and vent about our (usually shared!) challenges. We meet every 2 weeks. It’s free, drop-in, you can bring your kid if needed. We don’t sell to each other, but we do find naturally opportunities to work together (which is my favorite part!).
If we hadn’t tried this out, I think we’d still be looking for it today. And frankly, I don’t know if I would still own my own business (or if I would have written my book!) because I think I may have given up. So wild to think about.
If there’s a group or event you want but can’t find, here’s your sign to create it! Whether you’re fresh out of college, returning to work after a break, or building a business, having people to share ideas, frustrations, and wins with can make a real difference.
If you’re a local entrepreneur and want to join us, comment below or DM me!
And if you’ve been thinking about starting your own group, I’m happy to share what’s worked for us or offer a little encouragement to get it going.
