Seattle Book Club / The Self-Aware Interview Event!
When I was writing The Self-Aware Interview, I didn’t want to write a quiz. I don’t think Enneagram quizzes are very accurate, and I always think you will know yourself better than a quiz ever could. But I received a bunch of feedback that folks just wanted to take a quiz if they didn’t know their number, and I didn’t want to frustrate my readers. I wanted the book to be more accessible.
So, I wrote a brief quiz. Then I tested it on as many friends and family members as I could. It was mostly accurate, but a couple of them felt VERY incorrect. I also learned that some people feel like a different person at work than in “real life” and were filling out the quiz accordingly. 🤔 I’m used to things like perfectionism or performance coming into play in an interview, but this was brand new to me, as I don’t think my core personality really changes from environment to environment.
I panicked, just a couple weeks away from my book launch. There was a lot of back and forth, editing, and in-depth conversation (thank you, amazing friends who took the time to do this, you know who you are!).
I’m happy to say the extra effort totally paid off last Thursday night at the Seattle Book Club / The Self-Aware Interview event at Urban Family Brewing Co.! In our small but mighty group of engaged readers, we took the quiz together and several folks who were new to the framework were excited that their quiz results so strongly resonated with them. We dove deeper into their type and talked about how they might show up at work (or help set themselves up for success), and they left interested to learn more about the Enneagram.
This has been one of the best parts of writing a book!!! Finding your people, geeking out on a niche topic, and hopefully giving them something useful to take with them. It makes all of the editing, self doubt and time spent alone with your computer worth it.
Huge thanks to Samantha Clark (Seattle Book Club) for partnering with me on this event, I think we all had a lot of fun. Also, shout out to my mini me whose childcare unexpectedly fell through and she had to stay up past her bedtime. 🫠 Another highlight was being asked on the way to the car, "Mommy, can you explain Enneagram 7 to me? It was hard to hear when you were talking about that." 🥰
Looking forward to the WSU Alumni Association Virtual Book Club on 9/24 at 1 pm, and Village Books Author Q&A on 10/24 at 6 pm in Bellingham, for more! I’d love to see you there.
