Vulnerability in Interviews

When you are honest and vulnerable in an interview....png

Clients are often surprised when I encourage them to be vulerable, show humility, and be their honest selves in an interview. There is so much messaging out there of "The right answer to question X" or "Never say Y in an interview", and unless we're talking about something illegal or disrespectful, I believe we need to challenge that black and white approach.

My vulnerable (and funny) answer in an interview for a job I really wanted made the interviewers laugh, apologize and remember me all at once.

When a prospective hiring manager told me a unique (and silly) story about how he got his first role, he made me smile and my confidence that I was a good fit for the role and the team grew.

What's a story that really sets you apart and demonstrates growth or self awareness? Or if you're a hiring manager, what can you tell a candidate to show another side of yourself or the company, and build trust within the interview? Let's embrace our awkward, flawed, fun, nervous, excited selves in our interviews and improve the hiring process.
